Choosing the right paint colours
In: Reno Tips, Style + Decorate

Spring is almost here and it’s a great time to freshen things up! Here are a few tips to keep in mind when choosing the right paint colour for your home.

 Start Small: Slow Your Roll!

Assure your confidence by testing your colour on a 12×12 inch space on your wall and leaving it for a day or two. You can see what this colour will look like in different lighting conditions and is much easier to imagine than holding up those small paint chips.

If you’re not quite sure where to begin when painting a space, test out your love for the colour in a powder room, small hallway, or an accent wall. It’s much less expensive to take it one step at a time.

If you find you don’t like the colour as much as you thought you would, it’s more manageable to cover up than having to redo the whole room. If you like it, then just keep on going!

Finding Inspiration

Pick your favourite colour from an accent piece that will be in the room such as a dish, furniture, artwork, rug, or blanket.

Setting The Mood

In the bedroom: Cool and neutral colours usually create a soft and restful feeling whereas stronger and dramatic colours give a bold statement.

In the dining room: Bright but warm colours tend to add a sociable atmosphere while deep blues, greens, and neutrals will give a more formal ambiance.

In kid’s rooms: If you want to create an active and energetic atmosphere, go with a brighter hue. But be careful, intense colours can lead to overstimulation and irritability. Try to pick a fun colour that is somewhat muted to keep both you and your child happy.

Lighting Is Key

Make sure to consider where your light is coming from when picking your paint colors.

Natural daylight will show the truest color, fluorescent lighting will cast a sharp bluish tone and incandescent lighting will bring out the warm tones. If you’re using a strong colour, it might be more effective when used as an accent wall with indirect light opposed to next to a large window.

Go With The Flow

Make sure each room’s colours are cohesive with the surrounding rooms.

Unless you’re an all doors closed kind of person, you’re going to be able to see the walls of connecting spaces from wherever you are in your home so when choosing colours, consider how they will flow from room to room.
