Inspired by their frequent travels and the timeless elegance of high-end hotels, the clients envisioned transforming their unfinished Coquitlam basement into a refined, multi-purpose retreat — a space to support daily wellness rituals, work, and entertaining. The result is an elegant, transitional space where every room carries a cohesive, elevated aesthetic through full wall paneling, crown mouldings, warm woods, and Calacatta Vagli marble surfaces threaded throughout.
A hidden doorway conceals the mechanical and storage areas behind seamless wall paneling, while thoughtful architectural detailing transforms exposed furnace ducting into intentional design features. It is the kind of basement that stops visitors in their tracks — warm, polished, and unmistakably luxurious.

A Hotel Lounge at Home
The lounge and wet bar anchor the entertaining side of the retreat, designed to feel less like a basement rec room and more like a boutique hotel bar. Custom millwork in contrasting dark and warm wood tones, with satin brass pulls, arched glass-backed display cabinets, and open shelving, creates an air of refined hospitality. An ice machine and dishwasher drawer are seamlessly integrated, while polished Calacatta Vagli marble — the same stone used in the bathroom — appears in the full-height backsplash and countertop, unifying the two spaces. RH Lambeth knurled brass sconces frame the television, echoing the bathroom’s fixture palette and reinforcing the suite’s cohesive, jewellery-like attention to detail.
An Award-Winning Sanctuary
The spa bathroom earned a First Place award at the 2026 NKBA Design Competition — a recognition speaking to both its design ambition and its execution. Conceived as a restorative wellness space beside the kickboxing gym, the bathroom integrates a walk-in shower, hemlock-clad infrared sauna, floating vanity, and enclosed water closet all within a compact footprint, without sacrificing visual openness or a sense of luxury. Bookmatched Calacatta Vagli marble slab walls, Brizo Luxe Gold fixtures, Jonathan Browning knurled brass sconces, heated floors and shower bench, and layered dimmable lighting combine to create a warm, sophisticated sanctuary that defies its basement context entirely.
