Project Details

This Coquitlam basement renovation transformed an underused lower level into a fully self-contained garden suite, designed to comfortably host extended family stays while giving the homeowner the extra storage and entertaining space she had long envisioned. The suite now includes a generous kitchen, living area, bedroom, office, bathroom, and laundry.

The transitional design draws inspiration from the mature, private garden visible through the suite’s walk-out patio doors, establishing a warm, collected palette of rift-cut white oak, sage green, brass accents, and natural stone that flows cohesively throughout. The result is a basement that doesn’t feel like a basement at all.

Award-Winning Kitchen Design

Designing the kitchen required solving a complex floor plan: seven wall openings, a structural bulkhead, and an angled corner window left very little uninterrupted wall space. Rather than hiding these constraints, the design integrates them into the architecture—creating a kitchen that feels spacious, connected to the garden, and purpose-built for entertaining.

The Details

A custom tapered hood anchors the stove wall, framed by rift-cut white oak floating shelves styled with everyday objects and personal pieces selected by our interior designer. The ceiling-height oak cabinetry wall conceals integrated refrigeration/freezer and abundant pantry storage, while a sage green dining island and sculptural concrete pendants complete the room’s warm, timeless palette. A ceiling-height white oak media unit echoes the kitchen’s millwork across the open-concept space.

The Bathroom

The bathroom continues the suite’s calm, nature-inspired palette with a rift-cut white oak vanity, Hemlock quartz surfaces, brass fixtures, and a frameless glass tub-shower. Consistent materials throughout the suite create a sense of continuity, making every room feel intentionally connected and welcoming.
