  • Location: North Vancouver

Our clients purchased this older North Vancouver two-story house with the vision of creating a home to grow with their family. Their deep affection for the neighborhood, the large treed property, and the historical features fueled the desire for this house—as well as the potential to seamlessly blend modern updates with its timeless charm.

The initial renovation focus was to update the kitchen and bathroom on the main floor while preserving the existing character of the home. The final project scope included an addition, exterior updates & painting, fireplace update, ensuite bathroom renovation, entryway & stairs updates, bedroom closet built-ins, and painting throughout. New wood flooring was laid to match the existing where needed, as well as new carpeting on the stairs and upper floor.

The extension to the back of the dwelling allowed us to expand the kitchen and facilitate an extra bedroom above. The fully customized kitchen features an arched plaster range hood, inset walnut spice shelves, a Zellige tile backsplash, integrated appliances, and a stunning walnut butcher block island framed by hammered brass pendant lights. In an under-utilized area off the kitchen, we introduced a wet bar and study area, as well as a large pantry finished with custom storage solutions. We love how the beverage bar’s elegant finishes complement the kitchen’s palette: brass wire mesh inlaid in the upper cabinet doors while green glossy tiles echo the kitchen cabinetry.

What set this project apart was the ability to create something bold and distinctive while maintaining a timeless quality, effortlessly blending the existing features with the new additions. This involved integrating original elements like the hardwood floors, arched design details, doors, and crystal door knobs, coupled with refinishing and maintaining the appeal of the stairs and fireplace mantle. We also drew inspiration from the original powder room wallpaper but elevated its design in the update to imbue the space with a more sophisticated feel.

A significant overhaul was carried out on the primary ensuite, creating a tranquil retreat for the owners. A freestanding bathtub was positioned in the corner, while a luxurious walk-in shower is finished with Calacatta marble chevron tile. New storage components were introduced in floating shelves and the double vanity, and brushed gold Riobel fixtures are used throughout.
